The BMI mystery solved

So, I've been trying to get to the bottom of the whole BMI thing - specifically why I am now below my target weight by some way, but still regarded as overweight. When I moved onto Phase 8 the doctor at Alizonne said this was frequently because people who have been overweight in the past end up with a slightly higher BMI, but I wanted to find out what weight I would need to get to to be considered normal.

I tried the NHS BMI calculator, which is frankly useless as it only tells you what your current BMI is, not what weight you need to be based on your height to be normal.

Luckily I found a really good calculator on the Diabetes UK website, and the results are:

- Current weight: 68kg (10st 9lbs)
- Current BMI: 26.6
- Normal range: 20-25
- Required weight to be within normal range: 63.9kg for a BMI of 25

Mystery solved!

They also have a great BMR calculator, which puts my medgem at 1,429 - so not a million miles away from what Alizonne calculated.

Definitely recommend their tools ;)

Hello,

I'd write 'hello Big Girl' but it doesn't seem appropriate anymore - perhaps 'hello Slim Girl' would be better.

I've been following your blog for a while now and have really enjoyed reading it. It has been very interesting following your weight loss journey and I think being size 22 on New Year's Eve and size 12 by July was incredible. Well done.

One thing you haven't really discussed on your blog is the Alizonne skin treatments and whether you have found that they work for you. Alizonne say that their treatments prevent baggy, wrinkly skin. You've mentioned having ultrasound, LPG & endermologie treatments but you haven't said what each one is supposed to have done for you and whether you think they have done what you thought they would.

Would you mind posting a description of the treatments and how well they have worked for you? (Or just about the ones you think have worked well?) Is there anything that you've done specifically to try to help your skin to shrink - particularly over your stomach and bust?

Since coming across your blog in June I have started my own weight loss & exercise program & am feeling a little healthier. I'm still wearing my size 22 clothes but they're now quite baggy and I've had to elasticate my linen trousers (hidden by the baggy tops), which is fantastic.

At the gym I go to there is a male trainer who is about 5'9" / 5'10", slim build but muscular who says he weighs 15 stone so his BMI is very high. He has no fat on him whatsoever and he is incredibly fit. Which goes to show how useless BMI measurements are!

I hope that your parents are still on the mend. Their accident and the aftermath must have been a terrible experience for all of you.

Good luck with maintaining your weight loss.

Cheers,

Sand.

Hi Sand, thanks for reading my blog and getting in touch - congratulations on your own journey!

On Alizonne you do 2 treatments:
- Ultrasound: this helps empty the fat cells that are located underneath the skin layers. The treatment involves them putting gel on you and then individual paddles, which are connected to a machine. When switched on each paddle feels like little pin pricks - not really painful more strange. Generally you work one area for 8 weeks before moving on to the next - in my case I had 12 paddles on my stomach and then 4 on the stomach with 4 on each knee
- Endermologie/LPG (they are the same thing): this basically tricks the skin into thinking it is damaged, which forces new cells to form - helping tighten the skin and eliminate sagging and stretch marks. The treatment involves wearing a full body stocking and having them basically "hoover" your body with a roller

Personally I think the treatments really helped, although the LPG/endermologie is easier to see the physical manifestations - as there is no way I could have lost 6 1/2 stone and not had saggy skin without it. I do have a tiny bit of loose skin in the tummy area, but this is loose rather than saggy - and I think is more down to the fact that I dropped down to fortnightly treatments after my parents' accident. There are many places around that offer the treatment, so if you have a lot of weight to lose I would recommend it. I've actually continued having 1 treatment per month and will probably only stop after 6-8 months or so. This, with the exercise should help keep things under control

I hope this helps and please feel free to send any questions you have - I'm happy to help in any way I can and really wish you well on your quest ;)

Take care
